What
is internal medicine?
Internal medicine is the diagnosis and treatment of serious
health problems of dogs and cats including hormonal imbalances
like diabetes and Cushing’s disease, gut diseases like
inflammatory bowel disease, liver disorders like cholangiohepatitis,
and blood diseases like immune mediated haemolytic anaemia
(IMHA).
Why
might a need an internal medicine physician?
The majority of vets in practice are able to successfully
diagnose and treat many of the conditions and diseases that
affect pets but internal medics have undergone further training
and examinations in internal medicine.
This targets their knowledge and experience and improves their
ability to diagnose and treat these conditions.
What
tests are involved in making a diagnosis?
Traditional tests like xrays and blood tests are routinely
used. But internal medics are also experienced in the use
of equipment such as endoscopes and diagnostic ultrasound
and special diagnostic techniques like spinal taps and bone
marrow biopsy
